Troubleshooting XML Sitemap Errors
An XML sitemap is a file that lists the important pages on your website, helping search engines like Google discover and index your content more efficiently. Errors in your sitemap can prevent search engines from processing it correctly, potentially hindering your site's visibility.
Analyzing Server Connectivity?
If Googlebot cannot reach your sitemap due to DNS or firewall issues, use our IP Lookup Tool to verify your domain is resolving to the correct host.
Common XML Sitemap Errors
- Invalid XML Format: Missing tags, incorrect nesting, or unescaped special characters (like
&in URLs). - Incorrect URLs: URLs listed might be relative instead of absolute, contain typos, point to 404 pages, or use HTTP when the site is HTTPS.
- File Size Limits: A single sitemap file should not exceed 50MB (uncompressed) or contain more than 50,000 URLs.
- HTTP Errors when Fetching: The sitemap URL must return a 200 OK status, meaning it can't be blocked by server rules or redirects.
How to Fix Sitemap Errors
- Use Google Search Console: Submit your sitemap URL to Search Console. It will report any errors found during processing.
- Validate Your Sitemap: Use online XML sitemap validators to check for structural and format errors.
- Verify All URLs: Ensure every
<loc>tag contains a complete, absolute URL and returns a valid 200 OK HTTP status code. - Check File Size: If limits are exceeded, split your sitemap into smaller files and use a sitemap index file to group them.
